Me, me, me… I love Chili!
Elijah is definitely a small little guy. At 10 months old, he still fits into many of his 4-6 month outfits, and although he was a chubby 3 month old baby, he is slim and small now. Don’t be fooled by those chubby round cheeks. He is mainly breastfed and has never really expressed much interest in food. In fact, I have never seen him really excited about eating any kind of food. This never bothered us since “Food before one is just for fun”, but still, he is rather small and I was wondering when he would start getting enthusiastic about eating. Well, on this particular day at my friend, McKenzie, Elijah went nuts for this the chili that we had for lunch! He barely stopped eating… every spoon of food that I placed on the table in front of him, he would scoop into his mouth with both hands. I had never seen him do that before. Normally he pokes at it, moves it around, squishes it and then eats a tiny pieces or two before losing interest. I was shocked to see him lift handfuls of it into his mouth, and then look at me for more. By the end of our meal, he had chili in his ears, down his shirt, and rubbed into his hair.
He didn’t suddenly develop a love of food after that, but things have been changing radically since that day. There have still been days when he doesn’t want much food at all, but then there are other days when he is getting more and more eager to eat. This makes me happy and sad all at once. Happy to see him growing into an independent little boy, but sad because for so many months he only needed (and wanted) mommy’s milk for nourishment. I am completely happy with the way that feeding has gone with Elijah. He exclusively breastfed until about 8 months, and now at 10 months it is becoming clear that the next stage is upon us. I’m sure that there are other moms out there that are feeling what I am feeling right now – It is quite tough to have completely breastfed for almost a year, and then realise that soon this won’t be the case anymore. He never wanted a bottle, so I have been with him every single day, all day, feeding him every 3-4 hours when he is awake, and now suddenly he is staring to eat on his own. WOW!
Those eyes. That bottom lip. The look. The chili all over.
Goodness, I love this little boy so much.
