XinHaoShan Park│Signal Hill Park. XinHaoShan (Signal Hill) is one of the 10 major hill parks in Qingdao. During the German occupation in 1897, It was once a signaling station. This hill offers 360° panoramic views of Old Qingdao and includes many scenic spots such as the hexagon pavilion, the YuLan pavilion, the revolving hill, the open-air tea house, the arch bridge, as well as many beautiful pathways. Last month I did a post showing you the views from this hilltop park. If you missed that, you can check it out here: Best Panoramic Views in Qingdao.
The park is near the old part of Qingdao – see the end of this post for the address. We walked to the top of this hill, after visiting a few other sights. The cost to enter the park was 3rmb, or 10rmb if you want to enter the rotating platform. We opted for the cheaper ticket because in China the glass on these towers is usually so filthy that I can’t take pictures anyway! If I can’t take pictures, I’m not interested! haha!
There is a map of the small park area at the entrance. You will see that there are several paths leading to the top. It’s possible to see 360 degrees of Qingdao if you make your way around the park. All along the main path there are side paths that lead to scenic lookouts and stone picnic tables. At the beginning of the walk through the paths, look for Zhanqiao Pier and Little Qingdao Isle in the distance. Closer to the top you will see the former Governor’s Mansion which is located nearby.
This park is close to the Protestant Church. There’s a small admission fee to the park only, and a slightly higher fee, but still small, for the rotating restaurant at the top of the hill. It’s quite a steep climb up this 98 meter hill but it’s worth it for the views. There are great sea views, and also views over the old part of the town. There are lots of places to sit and rest while admiring the view.
Lianxin Qiao (Heart-Linked Bridge). This stone arch bridge, also called Jixiang Qiao, or “Lucky Bridge”, is 6.75 meters long and 1.65 meters wide, was built in 1989. Following local customs, newly married couples would attach a lock to this bridge, demonstrating their determination to permanently love each other throughout their whole life.
At the top of the park you come to the rotating platform. If, like us, you didn’t buy a ticket, you can still walk around the base of the platform and have excellent views of the city, without the obstruction of the dirty glass. I explored this area alone, stopping to take pictures and enjoy the lack of people. Eli and Justin were playing on a platformed area a little further down the hill.
Are you in Qingdao and looking for a great spot to check out the family, or even on a date?
This is a really great spot! The views are spectacular, especially if you can make it up there on a clear day. We plan on returning here soon, to see the leaves in their glorious autumn shades. There are a number of stairs to climb, so keep that in mind if you are sightseeing with a little one in a stroller. A carrier would be best if your little one isn’t good with stairs.
