There’s a shopping mall in the same road as our apartment complex. Crazy, right? It’s barely one block away and yet we don’t seem to go there much. With Justin working across the road from a mall, and our apartment complex having so many convenient stores right below us, we really don’t need to venture any further. We do, however, make a trip to this mall when we want to get particular foods. In the past, we never found this place too interesting since we thought that there weren’t enough food options. It is nice having a Starbucks and other cafes only a block away… but we try not to waste too much money on those types of indulgences. In the last two weeks we have discovered at least 5-6 new places to eat at this mall. It’s not like they just opened up either, in fact, they were there all along. We were just lazy and assumed that we had found everything that they had to offer. On a date last week we decided to check out the second floor of this mall. It seemed to just consist of overly-priced high-end stores, so we never bothered taking a walk around. To our surprise, a little further than the fancy stores containing shirts for $300 is a really decent cafeteria. We were looking for more of a private meal since we were on a date, and to our luck we found a Japanese restaurant that had a quiet upstairs section. Yoshinoya is a global quick-service Japanese restaurant chain with more than 1,800 locations across the world. I loved the bright, fresh, and very clean interior of the restaurant. They had no English menu so we did our best to order based on the limited Chinese characters that we know. Pictures… Oh how we love menus with pictures!
“Goofball island is my favorite”
— Sorry, that’s a quote from Inside Out, one of
Eli’s my favorite movies at the moment. I find myself quoting lines from that movie at various times throughout each day. It really sticks with you (especially after you’ve watched it 467 times!)
Justin ordered a rice and beef dish. Mine was a soup broth containing various kinds of mushrooms, cabbage and fish cakes, and it came on a hot plate. There were strips of bacon which we later placed into the pot so that it could cook with the rest. This was a really yummy dish, although rather on the small size considering the price.
This year we have decided to explore more, and as lame as it sounds, just finding this new section of the mall was a great find for us! We have been stuck in a routine lately, and as great as that is at times, we have to remember to take time to branch out. These winter months are tough for us, but even though we can’t really hike, run, go on pleasant walks, or sightsee, we can find other ways to enjoy ourselves.
Yoshinoya was great – we are definitely going back there!
